The long range Boeing 747SP (Special Performance) is so far the only 747 model to feature a changed fuselage length compared with the 747-100.The fuselage is shortened by 14.35 m, while the vertical tail was increased in height to compensate for the reduced moment arm with the shorter fuselage. The Boeing 747SP retained 90% commonality of components with the 747-100 and 200.

05 oct 1998 ZS-SPF Boeing 747SP-44 Linhas Aereas de Mozambique Shortly after Take-off from Maputo International Airport, Mozambique the no. 3 (Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7FW) suffered an uncontained failure. Flying debris caused damage to the no. 4 engine and the wing. A fire erupted, but couldn’t be extinguished immediately. An emergency landing was carried out. 0 fatalities / 66 on board.
