Introduction
The Nationaal Militair Museum (National Military Museum) in Soesterberg represents the premier national showcase for Dutch military history and air power. Situated on the historic grounds of the former Soesterberg Air Base, the institution merges the former collections of the Royal Netherlands Army Museum and the Militaire Luchtvaart Museum to present an integrated narrative of armed forces heritage.
General Information about the Museum
Full Name of the Museum: Nationaal Militair Museum (NMM)
The Nationaal Militair Museum opened in late 2014, uniting two distinct state institutions: the former Legermuseum (Army Museum) in Delft and the Militaire Luchtvaart Museum (Military Aviation Museum) at Soesterberg. Both heritage streams trace their roots back to early-20th-century collection efforts, notably the establishment of military artifact preservation in Delft (1913) and the growth of the aviation collection at the birthplace of Dutch military flying, Soesterberg Air Base. The modern, purpose-built structure was developed on the former air base terrain to house expansive indoor galleries and a sprawling outdoor landscape park, officially welcoming the public as a flagship component of the Stichting Koninklijke Defensiemusea (Foundation of Royal Defense Museums).
Indoor and Outdoor Collections
Current: The indoor “Arsenaal” hall features iconic fighter jets, armored vehicles, and historical artifacts alongside interactive exhibitions, while the vast outdoor park displays heavy military aircraft and ground defense systems across the former runway environment.
Former: Previous collections were housed separately at the historical Militaire Luchtvaart Museum exhibition hangars on the southern side of Soesterberg Air Base and the Legermuseum facility in Delft prior to their consolidation.
