The NATO Tiger Meet 2009 Spottersday occurred at Kleine-Brogel Air Base, welcoming international photographers and aviation enthusiasts during the 48th annual NATO Tiger Association exercise. Staged by the host unit 31 Smaldeel, the gathering showcased realistic combined air operations, specialized anniversary paint schemes, tactical mass formations, and solo dynamic handling routines.

History

The spottersday attracted approximately 6,000 visitors who observed more than 50 participating exercise aircraft.

Flight operations featured mass mission departures and a synchronized Tiger formation flypast. Demonstrations included the Belgian Air Component F-16 Solo Display flown by Michel “Mitch” Beulen and a rehearsal departure by the Royal Netherlands Air Force F-16 Demo Team for the neighboring Sanicole Airshow. Aircraft present included the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon, Dassault Rafale B, Dassault Mirage 2000C, Dassault Mirage F1M, Panavia Tornado IDS, Saab JAS-39 Gripen, and McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet. Rotary participants comprised the Mil Mi-24V Hind, Agusta A109, Agusta-Bell AB-212, and AgustaWestland AW101 Merlin.

Static flightlines featured specialized schemes, including the host unit’s low-visibility “Blackbird” F-16AM, a 50-year reconnaissance anniversary Tornado IDS, and France’s Mirage 2000C “Tiger Terminator”.

• Showground Dimensions: Military base covering 485 hectares, equipped with two parallel asphalt/concrete runways measuring 3,096 meters (Runway 05R/23L) and 2,499 meters (Runway 05L/23R) in length; spotters occupied designated flightline viewing zones along taxiway tracks.
• Goal of the Spottersday / Exercise: To conduct high-readiness Composite Air Operations (COMAO), air-to-air refueling, low-level flying, and cross-border tactical interoperability while giving authorized spotters controlled photographic access to daytime exercise sorties.
• Participating Countries: 11 nations (including Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Norway, Switzerland, Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom).
• Stars of the Show: The EC 01.012 Dassault Mirage 2000C (Silver Tiger Trophy winner), the EC 05.330 Dassault Rafale B featuring graphic tiger fuselage art, the AG 51 Panavia Tornado IDS (“Best Tiger Tail”), and the Czech Air Force Mil Mi-24V Hind gunships.
