History: Key Facts

London Heathrow Airport originated in 1929 as the Great West Aerodrome in the hamlet of Heathrow. The British government expropriated the surrounding farmland during World War II to establish a heavy military transport base. The site transferred to civil control, officially opening for commercial flights on 25 March 1946.

Post-war passenger expansion prompted the phased opening of the central terminal area in 1955, Terminal 4 in 1986, and Terminal 5 in 2008. Situated on the Bath Road (A4), the Premier Inn car park has long served aviation photographers and spotters as a dedicated vantage point overlooking taxiway movements and approaches on the northern runway threshold. In July 2022, Heathrow operated four active passenger terminals (Terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5) while actively restoring long-haul networks and wide-body airline schedules across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East.
